Mature Women Want Lots Of Sex

Women over 50 want more sex

This current review of the data on sexual activity in the women enrolled in the Mature sex  study confirms an important basic fact: most women who are in decent physical and psychological health, have a reasonable quality of life, are in a partnered or intimate relationship and liked sex before menopause, like sex after menopause. However, the big news is that women who are in sexual relationships reported that their primary complaint was that they weren’t having sex as frequently as they would like.

In spite ofrecent reports that have highlighted the high prevalence of hypoactive desire disorder in females”—in other words, women who aren’t interested in sex—“more women in the present study were dissatisfied with their sexual activity because they preferred more rather than less sexual activity.”

This most recent evaluation of the incredible database provides information from 27,347 women who were enrolled between 1993 and 1998 at 40 clinical centers across the US. These women—who were between the ages of 50-79 years at the time of their entry into the study—were asked to complete questionnaires on a variety of subjects at the start of the study and again in one year.

More than 60% of women over 50 are sexually active. Three and six years later, a random 8.6% sub-sample of study participants was asked to fill out questionnaires again. The newest evaluation of mature sex data “is the first to summarize the responses to all the sexual activity questions in the mature women having sex trials.”

The authors of this report reinforce the knowledge that “previous function and relationship factors are more important than the hormonal determinants of sexual function. The strength of pre-existing sexual activity as a predictor of current sexual activity suggests that women who remain sexually active as they age are able to preserve sexual function despite declining hormone levels at menopause.”

The study noted that 60% of women 50-59 were sexually active; that almost 50% of women in their 60s were sexually active and that close to 30% of women in their 70's remain sexually active. Significantly, for many of the women who were not sexually active, the lack of a partner or a partner with illness was the reason most often listed in this study.

Older Women Want sex

Reprinted from Newsweek  -

A happy sex life for older women is still very possible, but you have to make an effort.

Can you have hot sex forever? No problem—just stick to a careful diet, regular Pilates and the miracles of modern medicine. At least that's the message we're getting from the recent burst of celebrity cougar mania and new advertising campaigns from pharmaceutical companies promising that hormones will restore our aging bodies to their former glory. But is it reasonable for women over 50 to expect the same level of sexual satisfaction and drive as a 25-year-old? And is this what women really want?

On one level, just asking these questions represents progress. In Victorian times, for example, doctors routinely warned midlife women to abstain because intercourse past menopause could be fatal. The exact mechanism for this predicted demise wasn't always clear, but physicians of that era did believe it was dangerous for older women to even think about sexual activity because erotic thoughts might, among other evils, evoke regrets for lost allure and those regrets could trigger disease. Medical literature and popular culture of the time (mostly written by men, of course) often portrayed women over 50 as borderline insane . . .

But there are certainly very real challenges. Women's bodies change as they get older—no matter how much yoga or liposuction they can afford. A slower metabolism makes staying slim a struggle. That's why the vast majority of American women over 45 are either overweight or obese. In order to enjoy sex, you have to feel that you're sexy. That's not easy if your self-esteem is tied to unrealistic images of eternal youth . . .

Even for women who maintain a size 4, satisfying sex after 50 can be difficult. In a 2007 University of Chicago study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, half of sexually active

Americans aged 57-85—male and female—reported bothersome sexual problems. The biggest issue for women is generally the lack of an able partner, usually because of death, divorce or erectile dysfunction (in spite of Viagra). But even many women with partners struggle to find sexual satisfaction. At some point in their lives, about 20 percent of women experience painful intercourse, a condition called dyspareunia.

When this happens to women after menopause, it's often because of hormonal changes in vaginal tissue—hence the ad campaigns for vaginal estrogen. (But don't self-diagnose. Talk to your doctor. The pain could also be caused by another problem, such as infection, an allergic reaction or even an early warning of developing cancer.)

Older women want to have the same sex life they had at 25

Many women find that their libidos take a nose dive as they get older. Hormones may play a role here, too, but low desire can also reflect how a woman feels about aging, her fitness level, stress, medications she is taking or problems in her relationship. Scientists used to think that men and women experienced sex the same way—in effect, a straight line from desire to arousal to orgasm. But now they see female sexual progression as a circle, with many interrelated factors—emotional intimacy, arousal, emotional and physical satisfaction and desire. Men can take a pill to stay aroused and enjoy sex as they get older, but women's responses are far more complex,

If you don't have a partner at the moment, it's still important to keep the vaginal area healthy. Doctors say that when it comes to sex, the best advice is use it or lose it. Sexual activity encourages blood flow, which helps keep vaginal tissue healthy and makes it easier to become lubricated. Without a partner, of course, this means DIY (masturbating). Kegel exercises are also a good idea to strengthen the pelvic-floor muscles.

The bottom line? A happy sex life after 50 is still very possible, but you have to make an effort. Feeling good in your own skin and being open-minded and creative are what sexy is all about. In fact, many midlife women say sex gets better after menopause because they are comfortable with who they are, they know what they like and how to ask for it, and they don't have to worry about bleeding or pregnancy. Of course, it's also important to stay as healthy and fit as possible. But try to block out all the cultural messages that say that if you don't look like you're 20, you're not sexy. Our personal favorite role model there is actress Helen Mirren, still sexy and glorious and proudly 63. And—by the way—still rocking a bikini.
